Introduction
This article introduces Fontaine, a long-standing kissaten established in 1967 in Kagurazaka. Located one minute from Kagurazaka Station (Tokyo Metro Tozai Line) on the B1 floor of a corner building toward Akagi Shrine, the café offers nostalgic interiors, gentle service, and surprisingly affordable pricing.

A Retro Kissaten Founded in 1967

“Fontaine” is a classic kissaten with nearly six decades of history. Even its signboard evokes a distinct Showa-era retro feel. Because the shop is in the basement, some people may hesitate to enter despite noticing the sign. For this visit, we stopped by during the weekend morning hours.
Inside the Café and the Morning Menu

Descending the stairs and opening the door reveals a snug, almost “secret base” atmosphere. The master, with a gentle demeanor, welcomes guests. About 20 seats are available, and solo guests can feel comfortable dropping in. Decorative items line the interior, giving the room a time-slip vibe.
Menu (partial)

Toast Set 550 yen / Ham Toast Set 800 yen / Hot Dog Set 650 yen / Ham Roll Set 650 yen / Egg Roll Set 650 yen / Mixed Sandwich Set 900 yen / Egg Sandwich Set 850 yen / Coffee 400 yen / Café au Lait 480 yen / Lemon Tea 400 yen.
Until 11:00, the morning service discounts select sets by 150 yen: Toast Set 400 yen, Hot Dog Set 500 yen, Egg Roll Set 500 yen. Beverage and food prices are remarkably modest for Kagurazaka.
Toast Set and Mixed Sandwich

We ordered the Toast Set at the morning service price (400 yen). Butter or jam pairs excellently with a strong cup of coffee. Instead of fluffy bread, the toast is crisp—home-style and nostalgic in the best possible way. It’s a pleasantly “un-Kagurazaka-like” moment of simple comfort.

We also tried the Mixed Sandwich Set (900 yen). The sandwich is prepared after ordering; from the counter kitchen you hear eggs cracking and whisking, and the toaster at work—details that add to the charm. The flavor is straightforward, yet the master’s warm presence makes it all the more satisfying.
Summary

“Fontaine,” founded in 1967, offers a restful space with prices that feel rare for Kagurazaka. As a quiet hideaway for a break, it’s easy to recommend. If you’re in the neighborhood, consider dropping by.
