Founded in 1921 (Taisho 10), Oroji has been loved for over a century. The restaurant is tucked away in a narrow alley behind Isetan in Shinjuku Sanchome, where lines still form daily during lunchtime.

The two-story interior offers 34 seats: counter and tables on the ground floor, and additional tables in the basement. The basement floor is quieter, making it ideal for those who prefer a calmer atmosphere.

The Famous “Ton-don” (Curry Cutlet Bowl)

One of Oroji’s signature dishes is the ton-don (¥1,100), a curry rice topped with minced-meat cutlet rather than a single pork fillet. The breading is thin and crisp, while the meat inside is tender and easy to bite through.

The curry sauce is moderately spicy, pairing well with both the cutlet and rice. It’s a dish that balances rich flavors with simplicity, a true taste of Taisho-era culinary style.

Before the main dish arrives, guests are served Oroji-zuke, a house-made pickle with green peppers and koji—slightly salty and perfect as a side with drinks.

    The Tonkatsu Set

Another must-try is the Tonkatsu Set (¥1,800). Unlike the ton-don cutlet, this version features thicker slices, best enjoyed with plenty of mustard.

The set includes a unique miso soup with bacon, tofu, onions, and shiitake mushrooms, offering a flavorful twist. The rice, made with premium Niigata Koshihikari, is firm and fragrant, complementing the meal perfectly.
