Shinjuku Gyoenmae Beer Pub: HIGHBURY -THE HOME OF BEER-

HIGHBURY -THE HOME OF BEER- is a beer pub located about a one-minute walk from Shinjuku Gyoenmae Station.

With an exterior that feels like a pub you might find overseas, the shop was launched in September 2016 by Kohei Ando, who trained at the renowned UK brewery Thornbridge BREWERY. The original article also notes that the pub held a 7th anniversary event in September 2023.

I visited for the first time a little after 8:00 PM on a weekday.

    Inside the Pub

There are around 30 seats in total, including counter and table seating, and the article notes that some guests were enjoying drinks solo as well.

The drink menu includes several beers in different sizes (excerpt, tax included), such as:

Cask Condition Ale, Lehmans (?) / “Re-men-broi” (as written in the original article: Re-men-broi), YEBISU, Sapporo Draft Beer Black Label, and Thornbridge taps including Jaipur, AM:PM, and Khiron, plus Hoegaarden White.

The lineup changes by day, but the article explains that HIGHBURY serves Thornbridge taps as the brewery’s only antenna shop in Japan.

The staff are very knowledgeable about beer, and if you’re unsure, the article notes that they may offer tastings so you can find something you like.

What We Ordered: Beer and Snacks

    Lehmans / “Re-men-broi” (S) – 1,300 yen

We started with a toast using the S-size “Re-men-broi”

According to the article, it’s a smoked version of Baeren Craft Beer’s “Classic” from Morioka, with a rich but easy-to-drink profile.

    Thornbridge AM:PM (1/2) – 800 yen

Next, we ordered Thornbridge’s AM:PM as a half size.

The article describes it as lightly fruity, refreshing, and easy to drink—something you could enjoy from morning to night, which matches the name.

    Edamame Hummus – 650 yen

For food, we tried the edamame hummus. The article notes that you can clearly taste the edamame aroma, and the seasoning hits a good balance that pairs well with beer.

    Chicken & Chips – 800 yen

We also ordered chicken & chips. The chicken was tender with a firmer batter, and the dish had a subtle rosemary aroma.

The texture is described as crispy and fluffy, not too heavy, and easy to keep snacking on with a beer. The thin fries feel almost like snacks—an excellent match for drinks.

More Thornbridge Taps: Jaipur and Khiron (1/2) – 800 yen each

We also tried other Thornbridge taps like Jaipur and Khiron in half sizes.

The original article frames the pub as a place where you can enjoy great beer while also sensing respect for the history behind traditional brewing methods.

    Closing

That’s it for my visit to HIGHBURY -THE HOME OF BEER- near Shinjuku Gyoenmae.

The pub is also known as a place where Arsenal supporters gather for Premier League matches. The article mentions that on match days, they may pause parts of the food menu and the whole pub watches the game together.

It’s also within walking distance from Shinjuku-sanchome, so if you’re interested, consider stopping by.

    See you next time.
