    A Long-Standing Chinese Diner Since 1976

Founded in 1976, Ramen Yamadaya is a classic “machi-chuka” (local Chinese diner).
Located just a 3-minute walk from Nishi-Shinjuku-gochome Station on the Toei Oedo Line, the shop is easily recognized by its bright red awning.

The diner once appeared on Fuji TV’s popular program “Tunnels’ Thanks to Everyone” in the corner “Kitanai Umai Mise” (Dirty but Delicious Restaurants). Its timeworn appearance might seem intimidating at first, but once you step inside, you’ll find an authentic atmosphere full of character.

The interior is equally nostalgic, with faded menu posters covering the walls. The shop has around 18 seats, including both tables and small tatami-style seating.

The clientele ranges from local residents and nearby workers to curious tourists, including foreign visitors. Despite its modest size, the atmosphere is lively and welcoming.

    • Miso Ramen – ¥750
    • Wonton Ramen – ¥700
    • Fried Rice Set (half fried rice + ramen) – ¥900

What We Ordered: Katsucurry, Half Fried Rice Set, and Gyoza

We began with the half gyoza (¥300), served in generous portions despite the “half” size. The filling is mildly sweet but well-seasoned, delicious even without dipping sauce, and pairs perfectly with Yamadaya’s homemade chili oil.

Next, we tried the half fried rice + ramen set (¥900). The fried rice includes char siu, egg, naruto fish cake, and green onions, with a balance of fluffy and moist texture. The ramen is a nostalgic soy sauce-based style with a chicken broth — simple yet deeply comforting.

Finally, we couldn’t miss the katsucurry (¥950). The curry is thick and flavorful, reminiscent of the curry rice often found at soba shops, with a rich umami from dashi. It starts off slightly sweet, followed by a mild spicy kick. The breaded cutlet remains crispy even under the sauce, making it a standout dish.

    Conclusion

If you’re looking for an authentic “machi-chuka” experience in Shinjuku, Ramen Yamadaya is a must-visit. With its affordable pricing, half-size options, and nostalgic flavors, it’s the kind of diner that makes you want to return again and again.

Personally, we highly recommend the katsucurry, but the ramen and fried rice sets are equally satisfying.

Next time you’re in Nishi-Shinjuku, don’t hesitate to stop by this hidden local gem.
