Introduction:
Omoide Yokocho in Shinjuku West is a maze of nostalgic izakaya bars beloved by both locals and foreign visitors. Among them, Tachinomi Banpaiya stands out as a casual “senbero” spot—where you can enjoy a drink and several dishes for around 1,000 yen. In this article, we share our firsthand visit and highlight the must-try “Taiwan Yakisoba.”

A Friendly “First Drink” Izakaya: Tachinomi Banpaiya Omoide Yokocho

Born from the founder’s wish for a place where anyone could casually enjoy a first drink, Tachinomi Banpaiya is also known as a “shitajiiya,” meaning a bar where you set the base for drinking. It has gained popularity as a “senbero” spot, where just 1,000 yen can get you pleasantly tipsy.
Located in Omoide Yokocho, a bustling alley now packed with foreign tourists, the shop remains a go-to for Japanese regulars. We visited on a weekday evening to experience the atmosphere firsthand.
Inside Tachinomi Banpaiya

The interior features counter seating encircling the kitchen, plus some tables, accommodating about 30 guests on the first floor. The vibe is nostalgic, reminiscent of the Showa era. Upstairs, 42 additional seats are available (with a small towel fee of +70 yen), but if you want the full standing-bar experience, the first floor is highly recommended.
The drink menu is extensive and affordable: highballs for 290 yen, wine for 330 yen, lemon sours for 330 yen, draft beer for 490 yen, and sake starting at 780 yen. Food options include simmered dishes, fried snacks, sashimi, and more.
Senbero Favorites: From “Nimono” to “Taiwan Yakisoba”

Ordering here is simple—drinks are requested verbally, while food orders are written down and handed to staff.

Highlights from our visit included:
- Hakusai Asazuke (Lightly Pickled Cabbage, 130 yen) and Kaki-su (Oysters with Vinegar, 310 yen): small dishes with refreshing flavors.
- Korokke (Croquette, 130 yen): large, crispy, and satisfying whether shared or eaten solo.
- Nimono with Egg (190 yen): tender offal with radish fully infused with flavor.
- Maguro Spare Ribs (310 yen): garlicky and savory, cooked right in front of us—an incredible bargain.
- Grilled Saba (Mackerel, 250 yen): fatty and flavorful with a nostalgic touch.
- Fried Chicken (220 yen): three generously sized pieces, crunchy and delicious with mayo.
- Taiwan Yakisoba (490 yen): the star of the show, topped with savory ground pork—perfect with drinks and so addictive you’ll want to come back for more.
